Aquaculture Sector Strategy

Following ten years of rapid growth, New Zealand’s aquaculture sector is set for unprecedented growth. This arises from legislative change, declining global fisheries, growing world populations and rising demand for seafood products.

If we introduce new species, improve productivity, introduce technology advancements, increase utilisation of hatchery space, and understand both the domestic and export seafood markets, projected growth will exceed the sector target of $1 billion by 2025.

This is very evident in the Aquaculture New Zealand Research Strategy

"An inclusive and sector-wide approach to R&D will allow aquaculture to grow in New Zealand‘s next major primary sector. This will have benefits not only for current and future sector participants; but Maori/iwi, communities and New Zealand as a whole," says Peter Vitasovich, Chairman of Aquaculture New Zealand.
