"Our KONO retail brand was the first to adjust the form of the mussel half shell commodity product into a value added consumer ready product, and now we are going to be leading the way in new species research and development", says Keith Palmer, CEO, Wakatu Incorporation

Wakatu Incorporation
, together with NIWA , has undertaken development work on various shellfish, finfish and algae species to identify eight potential projects, including

  • Mussel hatchery

  • Oyster hatchery

  • Fin fish hatchery

  • Algae production

  • Fish food production

  • Paua enhancement

  • Sea cucumber production

It is intended to take each species model and apply a commercialisation model that will follow a consistent path, including:

  • Intellectual property management plans

  • Research and development programmes through to pilot scale

  • Market research and development plans, funded through to market testing

  • Once proven, a scaled up proposal for full commercialisation

Potential opportunities exist for interested partners to co-invest and participate in these species development. For more information please contact us now.
