The Horoirangi Centre of Seafood and Aquaculture Innovation has been a long term vision of Wakatū Incorporation, a Māori-owned Nelson-based investment company, for many years.

Horoirangi will be a world class centre, including:

  • Research and Development and Education Campus
  • Land-based aquaculture pilot scale research
  • Offshore pipeline to provide large quantities of quality seawater
  • 120 hectare commercial aquaculture zone, to include land-based aquaculture ponds, hatcheries, and nurseries.
     
  • The long term vision  includes marine, aquaculture and cultural education training and research, hospitality and tourism facilites. A cultural interpretation, marine innovation and historic centre are also planned, linking seafood, aquaculture, culture, tourism and hospitality with a public and school education centre.

Horoirangi is the ideal location

  • Nelson is one of the largest fishing ports in the Southern Hemisphere, located in the centre of New Zealand

  • Located between the Marlborough Sounds, some of the best sheltered aquaculture water space in the country, and

  • Tasman and Golden Bays, where significant new and existing water space has been allocated to aquaculture production

  • A stable workforce with specialisation in the fishing industry

  • Enjoys a temperate climate with around 2,200 hrs/annum of sunlight
