Research and Development and Education Campus

In April this year the New Zealand Government gave its support to develop the Horoirangi Centre for Seafood and Aquaculture Innovation by providing a $1.69million cash grant to Cawthron Institute.

This planned $6million upgrade of the Cawthron Institute’s research and development and education facilities is the first step in the development of Horoirangi.

It will provide a world class aquaculture research and technology centre for New Zealand that, when completed, will facilitate collaboration and co-operation between research organisations, education providers and industry.  The primary focus is to to see research outcomes successfully commercialised and taken to market -  click here to view the concept "Innovation to Commercialisation".

Development work has begun to create 1200 square metres of shared research and development space and education facilities, comprising specialist laboratories, training facilities and associated site infrastructure.   Government funding will go towards further developing these facilities, and enable more buildings, ponds and biosecurity facilities.

An immediate demand exists for this facility, which has been designed to enable flexibility depending on tenants and their projects, and offers innovative investment and partnership opportunities.

"This facility will help the aquaculture sector investigate and pilot high-value species and products, including enabling spat to be artificially grown onshore in commercial quantity, reducing the industry's reliance on limited wild stocks", Economic Development Minister Gerry Brownlee said.
